"I feel like I have learned so much!! And would feel confident doing some basic communication with a member of the deaf community. This course is great! Thank you so much, Lisa Mills."
- Rhyss Clarke, Hairstylist
"Just wanted to say a huge thank you for this course - had a small "sign chat" with my daughter at bed time after she'd taken her hearing aids out. She usually lip reads but it was so much better being able to add signs too. She's in gcse year but I'll help her learn more in the summer when her brain has more space after exams! Feeling very inspired now."
- Katherine White, Junior School Assistant
My name is Lisa Mills & I am your online tutor. I am a registered school teacher (early childhood, special education, primary & secondary) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual Arts & Drama; & a Graduate Diploma in Education. |
I am bilingual in spoken English & BSL (British Sign Language) / Auslan (Australian Sign Language).
Deaf since birth, it wasn't until my teenage years that I learnt to sign. It was the best thing I ever did as it enabled me to discover my deaf identity & learn ways to be proud of my deafness.
I have published a beautiful hardcover deaf awareness book 'Look at Me: Deaf Awareness' & a sign singing DVD for children called 'Sing & Sign with Lisa'. Both are popular resources! These are both available in my online store.
I am also married to a wonderful deaf man from England & we have two gorgeous hearing children 4y.o & 2y.o. Both children are growing up to be bilingual in sign language & English. In fact, both are said to be demonstrating very high communication, language & vocabulary skills for their age - thanks to sign language!
Sign language is a beautiful language & has opened many doors for my family & I. And, I anticipate that learning sign language will open new doors for you too.
To view my style of teaching for my Auslan / BSL video tutorials please click on this youtube link. This video clip is number 1 on Google rankings for Auslan fingerspelling. It has many views, likes & comments. Please note this is an Auslan fingerspelling video tutorial. However, if you are here to learn BSL Online, you too can benefit from this video because Auslan & BSL fingerspelling are the same. Do take a look!
I am also a trained yoga teacher with over 500hrs of training in Level 1 (200hrs) & Level 2 (300hrs) Yoga Alliance accredited courses. This training was predominantly in Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Iyengar & Hatha Yoga as well as Yoga Anatomy, Pranayama, Meditation & Ayurveda. In addition to this training I have completed Level 1 & 2 teacher training in Children's Yoga, Special Yoga (for children with disabilities) & Prenatal Yoga.
To view my style of teaching deaf yoga please click on this youtube link. This is a new video clip & is currently being very well received. It highlights ways to make yoga accessible to deaf people.
I trust that you will enjoy learning online with me. I take great pride in my training courses & like to deliver the best I can give. This website is a fantastic place to do online training with me and it is very user-friendly.
If you are in Australia, I am also available for special request group bookings. I have delivered many onsite training workshops for community, education & corporate groups. For more information about my face to face training workshops & retreats please visit my website www.lisamillsonline.com
"As I’ve been doing this course I’ve shared all my learning with my two small boys (6 & 8 years old) as practice and because I think it’s important they learn too; they have been showing their teachers, and on Friday my youngest son came home and taught me how to sign merry Christmas, which his teacher had looked up and learned for him. Just joining this course has opened up so much extra communication and as a family we are all learning so much - and now a whole class is learning, because I joined a course. Thank you!"
- Lizzie Adams
"I have thoroughly enjoyed both levels. It's been brilliant to find out how much I knew already from watching the interpreter at church and gradually joining in with as much of the signing in the songs as I can manage. I needed to learn the signs that I don't see so often in church services (some of the sports and activities come up in the notices, I had missed out on some colours etc.) - and the little words sometimes speeding past me so fast I wasn't picking them up. This course has really helped my confidence and shown me the handshapes that it's harder to see at a distance (e.g the soon handshape which I was doing as a fist). Now I need to carry on practicing! I will be using the course to revise till it's all sunk in deep. Thank you very much."
- Angela Curror, Blogger and Artist (Photography and Mixed Media)
The course is completely self-paced - you decide when you start and when you finish. However, access to the course is valid for only one year.
After enrolling, you have unlimited 1-year access to this course - across any and all devices you own! So you can start anytime, go at your own pace, and re-watch as often as you'd like for a year.

"My whole family has paid to do the course (my two children 11 & 16) have decided they would like to learn but get the certificate as it would be great for their cv's, including my husband. Who after looking at bsl apps for 3 months agreed that we need to finally take the plunge and learn.
This is all because I am single sided deaf. I am struggling to use my cross hearing aids. When I wear them I can hear behind me wonderfully but I can't hear in front of me. In a supermarket it's too loud even turned down and I end up with headaches, migraines and my tinnitus ringing loudly through my whole head. I do lip read but we feel I need to have something to back up what I think they are saying. My hearing aids are also causing the skin in ears to rip and are very sore (this is because of a genetic condition I have), so I don't wear them much at all. So with this all in mind sign language seems the next logical step and when my tinnitus is bad (both ears) I will have (hopefully) sign language and lip reading to allow me to continue to communicate and to not feel left out. As I do feel like I sometimes when out and about.
So thank you Lisa Mills for doing the January offer to make it possible for my family of 4 to do the course plus my a carer and friend to also take part. I would never have been able to afford it otherwise. Thank you for making a difference."
